Rules and Guidelines
Categories and Repertoire:
Incomplete Works:
Students may perform a single movement of a piece or just the prelude or just the fugue from any of the following works:
Preludes and Fugues (including little Preludes and Fugues):
Students may perform an individual Prelude OR Fugue from the Little Preludes and Fugues or the two books of Preludes and Fugues. Time limit: 5 minutes
Suites, Partitas, Toccatas, and Sonatas:
Students may perform at least one movement of any of these works. Time limit: 5 minutes
Overtures, Capriccios, and Italian Concerto:
Students may perform one or more movements of any of these works. Time limit: 5 minutes
Complete Short works:
Students shall perform a complete short work (such as a Minuet or an invention) with all repeats and ornaments or a full longer work performing every single movement of the work from the following categories:
1- Works from Anna Magdalena Bach’s Notebook:
Students shall perform at least one piece from the Notebook, with repeats and ornaments. Time limit: 5 minutes
2- Inventions and Sinfonias:
Students shall perform at least one Invention or Sinfonia, with repeats if written. Time limit: 5 minutes
3- Preludes and Fugues:
Students shall perform at least one complete Prelude and Fugue from either Book 1 or Book 2. Time limit: 8 minutes
4- Suites, Partitas, Toccatas:
Students shall perform a complete work with all movements, without repeats. Time limit: 12 minutes
5- Overtures, Capriccios, Sonatas and Fantasias:
Students shall perform a complete work with all movements, without repeats. Time limit: 12 minutes
6- Special Titled works:
Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue BMV 903, Italian Concerto BMV 971, Capriccio sopra la lontananza del fragro dilettissimo BMV 992, Aria Variata BMV 989, Chaconne in d minor BWV 1004:
Students shall perform one complete work from those listed above, including all movements and sections. Time limit: 15 minutes
Baroque Works from other composers (not Bach):
Scarlatti Sonatas (Sonatas or pieces by Soler, Couperin, Rameau and other baroque composers may also be included in this category):
Students shall perform at least one Sonata, with repeats. Time limit: 8 minutes
If a student would like to participate in more than one category, two or more registration forms should be filled with independent fees for each one.
Application Fees:
CAPMT Members: $50
Non-CAPMT Members, additional $30
- CAPMT members who’s student is submitting an application must have paid State, National and Orange County Chapter dues before the application deadline.
- It is the responsibility of the teacher to abide by these guidelines. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of the applicant.
- All applicants under the age of 18 must have a Parent/Legal Guardian sign a consent waiver. Parents will be e-mail a consent waiver to sing and return.
- Students may choose to participate in one or more categories, independent of their age. Students cannot with repeated repertoire between Incomplete and Complete categories.
- Communications regarding the program should be between teachers and the event chair. Parents should not contact the event chair directly unless instructed to do so by the chair regarding the waiver.
- Decisions of the adjudicators are final.
- Teacher, parent/guardians and applicants may not converse or have any contact with the adjudicators before, during or after the competition.
- Fees for the application must be paid in full before the application deadline. Application deadline will be enforced. Late application forms will not be accepted.
- No repertoire changes are permitted once the application has been submitted. If you have any questions regarding the repertoire, please contact the event’s chair
- There are no refunds of the application fees in the event of non-participation or disqualification.
- All repertoire must be memorized and only original printed music must be submitted for the judges. No photocopies allowed to oblige by copyright laws.
- Previous First Place winners may NOT compete again in the same category in succeeding competitions.
- Student may NOT repeat any repertoire in subsequent years, even if they have not placed.
- Teachers should consider the time limit per category when selecting the repertoire. All pieces must be played in full, including repeats. Performers will be stopped when the maximum allocated time is reached.
