Rules and Guidelines
Categories, Repertoire and Time limit:
Category A: ages 8 and under. Time limit 10 minutes
A minimum of two pieces from Anna Magdalena Bach’s Notebook with the exception of Prelude in C Major BWV 846, Aria BWV 508, Polonaise Anh. 125, Polonaise Anh. 123 and Polonaise Anh. 130.
At this level the used of ornaments might be at the discretion of the teacher.
Category B: 9-10 years old. Time limit 10 minutes
A minimum of two pieces from Inventions no. 1 BWV 772 to no. 8 BWV 779. From Anna Magdalena Bach’s Notebook Aria BWV 508, Polonaise Anh. 125, Polonaise Anh. 123 and Polonaise Anh. 130.
Pieces are expected to be played with the repetitions and written ornaments. Additional ornaments for the repeats are optional and at the discretion of the teacher.
Category C: 11-12 years old. Time limit 12 minutes
A minimum of two pieces from Inventions no. 9 BWV 780 to no. 15 BWV 786 and Sinfonias no.1 BWV 787 to no. 6 BWV 792.
Pieces are expected to be played with the repetitions and written ornaments. Additional ornaments for the repeats are optional and at the discretion of the teacher.
Category D: 13-14 years old. Time limit 15 minutes
A minimum of two pieces from Sinfonias no. 7 BWV 793 to no. 15 BWV 801 and from Little Preludes and Fugues. The Preludes and Fugues count as one piece since they are expected to be performed as a set by keys just as the Well-Tempered Klavier Preludes and Fugues.
Please refer to an edition that pairs them together. Pieces are expected to be performed with the written ornaments.
Category E: 15-18 years old. Time limit 15 minutes
One option from the following:
Category F: 19-25 years old. Time limit 15 minutes
One option from the following:
Application fees:
Category A: $30
Category B: $30
Category C: $35
Category D: $35
Category E: $40
Category F: $40
If the teacher is a member of CAPMT, but not a member of Orange County Chapter, there will be a $10 surcharge per application.
If the teacher is a not member of CAPMT, there will be a $50 surcharge per application.
- CAPMT members submitting an application must have paid State, National and Orange County Chapter dues before the application deadline.
- It is the responsibility of the teacher to abide by these guidelines. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of the applicant.
- Applicants’ age category is determined by their age at the event date.
- All applicants under the age of 18 must have a Parent/Legal Guardian sign a consent waiver. Parents will be e-mail a consent waiver to sing and return.
- Communications regarding the program should be between teachers and the event chair. Parents should not contact the event chair directly unless instructed to do so by the chair regarding the waiver.
- Decisions of the adjudicators are final.
- Teacher, parent/guardians and applicants may not converse or have any contact with the adjudicators before, during or after the competition.
- Fees for the application must be paid in full before the application deadline. Application deadline will be enforced. Late application forms will not be accepted.
- No repertoire changes are permitted once the application has been submitted.
- There are no refunds of the application fees in the event of non-participation.
- All repertoire must be memorized and only original printed music must be submitted for the judges. No photocopies allowed.
- Previous First Place winners may NOT compete again in the same category in succeeding competitions.
- Student may NOT repeat any repertoire in subsequent years, even if they have not placed.
- Teachers should consider the time limit per category when selecting the repertoire. All pieces must be played in full. Performers will be stopped when the maximum allocated time is reached.

- One full English Suite with all the repeats
- One full Partita with all the repeats
- One Toccata
- Two Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Klavier I
Category F: 19-25 years old. Time limit 15 minutes
One option from the following:
- Two Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Klavier II
- Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in d minor BWV 903
- Italian Concerto BWV 971 (all three movements)
- Chaconne in d minor BWV 1004
Application fees:
Category A: $30
Category B: $30
Category C: $35
Category D: $35
Category E: $40
Category F: $40
