CAPMT District 8 Piano Performance Exam Rules & Guidelines
PURPOSE
The CAPMT District 8 Piano Performance Exam develops and evaluates performance, technique, and knowledge of repertoire (at a level appropriate to the age and level of the student, e.g. knowledge of music notation, symbols, terms, music history time periods, composers, form, tonality, and rhythm). Performance for an adjudicator includes three pieces representing differing time periods and styles (four for L 11 – 12). Memorization is recommended for all three/four pieces, but is required for two.
Levels include Preparatory A, Preparatory B and Levels 1 – 12. Technique requirements for each of the individual levels are the same as the CAPMT Student Evaluations and can be found on the CAPMT website. No sight reading, written theory, aural exam, or program notes will be included. The duration of the exam is a minimum of 10 minutes. Upper level exams will be scheduled for a longer period of time at the discretion of the Student Evaluations chair.

GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS
- Parents must get Zoom on their computers (free account). A computer should be used and the camera on the computer angled so the adjudicator can see a view of the student’s hands on the keys as well as their face (see technical set up below).
- Parents should visit the Zoom website to acquaint themselves with the program so that there is no lost time trying to connect with the meeting. Please see a short tutorial video below: https://youtu.be/v5fiCoc6nxE
- During the week prior to the exam, the adjudicator will send a Zoom meeting invitation to the email address provided by the student’s teacher on the registration form. This invitation will include a link that, when clicked, will send the user to the Zoom waiting room.
- Parents should log on to the meeting 10 minutes early, then wait for the adjudicator to enter the meeting.
- Once in the meeting, click the icon that says “Turn on Original Sound” so that the quality of audio is at the best possible level. If you have more than one child taking the exam consecutively, you must “Turn on Original Sound” for each new meeting.
- Parents must be in the house but in a room other than the keyboard so that the student and adjudicator can communicate freely. In the case of very young children, please be close enough that if your child calls out for help with the technology, you can assist them. But once you start the Zoom meeting, make sure audio and video are on, and check with the adjudicator that the placement of the camera is OK. Your child should be fine on their own as long as they don’t press anything on your device’s screen.
- At the end of the exam, please be sure to press “Leave Meeting” so that no subsequent exams are held up.

- Use a good external microphone (it can be from a headset) or enter a mobile phone number (so the sound can be through your new phone, with the phone network and not the wi-fi network).
- Place the pad, phone or laptop on the side of the piano at the level of the keys but far enough away so that the judge can see the upper part of the body.
