Rules & Guidelines
Categories, Repertoire and Time Limit:
There will be 2 categories for each age division. No arrangements are permitted. No concertos are permitted.
Classical Category: One movement of a Sonata or Sonatina from the Classical Period is required.
Romantic/Contemporary Category: One movement of a Sonata or Sonatina from the Romantic or Contemporary Period is required.
Division A: ages 8 and under. Time limit 5 minutes
Division B: 9-11 years old. Time limit 5 minutes
Division C: 12-14 years old. Time limit 7 minutes
Division D: 15-17 years old. Time limit 10 minutes
Division E: 18-25 years old. Time limit 10 minutes
Application fees:
Division A: $50
Division B: $50
Division C: $55
Division D: $60
Division E: $60
For teachers who are members of CAPMT, but not members of Orange County Chapter, there will be a $10 surcharge per application.
For teachers who are not members of CAPMT, there will be a $20 surcharge per application.
There is a limit of 8 students per teacher.
- 2026 CAPMT OC Sonata & Sonatina Festival will be held in-person.
- It is the responsibility of the applicant to abide by these guidelines. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of the applicant.
- Applicants’ age category is determined by their age at the event date.
- Communications regarding the program should be between teachers and the event chair.
- Decisions of the adjudicators are final.
- Teachers, parents/guardians, and applicants may not converse or have any contact with the adjudicators before, during or after the competition. Students of the adjudicators may not compete.
- Fees for the application must be paid in full by the application deadline. The application deadline will be enforced. Late applications will not be accepted.
- No repertoire changes are permitted once the application has been submitted.
- There are no refunds of the application fees in the event of non-participation.
- All repertoire must be memorized.
- Previous First Place winners may NOT compete again in the same category in succeeding competitions.
- Students may NOT repeat any repertoire in subsequent years, even if they have not placed.
- All pieces must be prepared in full. If a performance exceeds the time limit, the performer will be stopped but shall not be penalized for exceeding the time limit.
